Mentors and teachers are a special gift to the human society. These cannot simply be understood to be professions or titles, or some kind of a degree that is earned from an institution. Rather, these are linked to the personal qualities and concerns of the individual. Even more so, it is connected with how a person is able to connect with others to bring about their betterment. Could this be achieved merely on the basis of academic excellence or having a vast storehouse of knowledge? While those things certainly count, it is the concern and connection – the lighting up of the mind and heart – that fulfills the role of a mentor and teacher. (more…)
It’s about the how, the what, and the why of our thinking. Psychology is, of course, a field of study. None are subjects as fascinating as human beings.
There has been a noticeable insistence on physical things in recent times. It has been very deliberate, systematic, and evident of great intelligence. Who are its proponents is not the most important thing. One could, of course, examine the sayings of modern, atheist thinkers like Sam Harris and Richard Dawkins. Listening to such intelligent men and the way they reason is a pleasure. In that pleasure are the seduction and the feeling to the listener of great empowerment. One, no doubt, feels empowered by the way religion is proven to defy logic, reason, and even common sense. It is all fine up to that point. It is when the alternative becomes clearly visible that problems emerge. Having abandoned all traditional basis for morality, one then has to start afresh and without recognizing any authority in the pursuit of a fresh set of rules and laws and principles to define what is moral. In my opinion, if one is prepared to take a firsthand look at the final destination, the possible objective of a Godless thinking, it equips the mind with the necessary farsightedness. When the entire focus is on physical things, the extremism built into human nature that emerges from undivided attention then seeks to find the ultimate in pleasures. (more…)
Nuclear technology is not bad in itself. We have understood the sun and the stars, and in a way, have harnessed the same power to a lesser extent. We have controlled fission, and are yet to understand ways to control fusion for peaceful purposes. The insistence on using solar energy to fulfill the requirements for electricity is our next best option. However, with the existing political situation regarding North Korea and the US, it is once again time to remember the old foe of mankind, the ongoing self-made threat of human intelligence. What is it? Yes, it is the existence of the knowledge and the means to build nuclear weapons. The truly disconcerting fact is this: With so much power for annihilation, we have simultaneously existing, such poor leadership and judgment. There is the legitimate basis for worry. There is also the need for finding solutions.
Predictions are humanly impossible and are equally common. Yes, as rare as they should be, they, in fact, form a part of everyday speech. Whenever someone says, I will do this and I will do that, we are in a sense indulging in a prediction. It is our certainty about life itself and our ability to do as we wish that causes us to say such things. Not to live in morbid fear, but, we truly do not even know the end of a day at its start. The same is for our leaders. We may wish for things to end in a certain way, according to our chosen purpose and with our destination in mind. However, there is no guarantee this can happen. Even so, it is not the kind of uncertainty any human being wants to live with. It will be like living with the proverbial sword of Damocles hanging over our heads. We all have authority within us – some more than others – and our predictions do have power, as we determine the course we take based on some imagination, some opinion, and as much knowledge as possible. What can we do to improve our future given the power we do have? (more…)
A conversation has the power to liberate a human being. It has the power to set free the mind from bondage. Even one exchange of ideas is able to give a new direction to the thinking of a person, or the chance of realization. Why would anyone want to do so? The real reason has to be a concern for the other person, or on a larger scale, a concern for society. When conversations emanate from such concern and are also able to provide hope to others, there is indeed the prospect of growth. (more…)
