Mentors and teachers are a special gift to the human society. These cannot simply be understood to be professions or titles, or some kind of a degree that is earned from an institution. Rather, these are linked to the personal qualities and concerns of the individual. Even more so, it is connected with how a person is able to connect with others to bring about their betterment. Could this be achieved merely on the basis of academic excellence or having a vast storehouse of knowledge? While those things certainly count, it is the concern and connection – the lighting up of the mind and heart – that fulfills the role of a mentor and teacher. (more…)
There is many times the concern over how the world is, why it is the way it is, will it change, what will it become, when will the desired conditions come to be etc. Some of these concerns are legitimate, and all of them occur to the mind of a thinking human from time-to-time. After all this, there is the realization, that self-improvement is the most practical and possible undertaking any person could ever take. What would be the important considerations? How can I improve as a human being? These, too, are natural concerns and should occur to the mind of a thinking person. In this endeavor, let’s find practical and worthy ways to improve ourselves.
There has been a noticeable insistence on physical things in recent times. It has been very deliberate, systematic, and evident of great intelligence. Who are its proponents is not the most important thing. One could, of course, examine the sayings of modern, atheist thinkers like Sam Harris and Richard Dawkins. Listening to such intelligent men and the way they reason is a pleasure. In that pleasure are the seduction and the feeling to the listener of great empowerment. One, no doubt, feels empowered by the way religion is proven to defy logic, reason, and even common sense. It is all fine up to that point. It is when the alternative becomes clearly visible that problems emerge. Having abandoned all traditional basis for morality, one then has to start afresh and without recognizing any authority in the pursuit of a fresh set of rules and laws and principles to define what is moral. In my opinion, if one is prepared to take a firsthand look at the final destination, the possible objective of a Godless thinking, it equips the mind with the necessary farsightedness. When the entire focus is on physical things, the extremism built into human nature that emerges from undivided attention then seeks to find the ultimate in pleasures. (more…)
One would normally consider the taking of sides as being counter-intuitive to the idea of development. Whatever resources we have, we would want to use them in a planned, organized, and united effort to get the best possible results. There is any number of examples of this. In a family, when the father, mother, and children are able to work together toward maintaining peace it helps everyone. In a classroom of students, it only takes a few to disrupt the session for everyone. Those who do are deprived of the answers, and those who wish to learn are also deprived of their opportunity. Furthermore, it brings no joy to the teacher or lecturer to have to focus on disciplining some students and be distracted from teaching. When a surgery is being performed, is that the time for nurses and doctors to have arguments over anesthesia or surgical instruments? There are many examples which prove that success or development depends upon unity. (more…)
Is peace a valid goal to have? In the short term, it may not seem so. In the long term, it is one of the ultimate desires. The end of a war, the start of a conversation – it will all make sense if there is peace at the end of it. If peace is not the end of it, nothing we do is worthwhile. Ours will be an existence wasted in conflict and ending in pain. With social networking, we have the opportunity to put this to the test. We also have the opportunity to learn from our experience. When we have finally realized, we will find the value of having a fluid mind in interacting with a diverse group of people on social networks. (more…)
People seek thrill. To fulfill that pursuit they look for adventure. We all happen to be in a world right now where the next adventure is as close as our mobile phone. When connected to the Internet, the whole world is open before us. There are the possibility and prospect of visiting any place, reading endlessly, watching videos, listening to music etc. Still, the greatest thrill is the ability to communicate with others. Is it not so? While it is a thrill, how can all of us still maintain perspective and a quality of our communication? The answer should interest us because we all stand to benefit while we enjoy our present technology. (more…)
